Desmond’s brother, Dakota, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) two years ago and is still in the maintenance phase of treatment. Since diagnosis, Desmond stepped up and start taking care of himself when it came to school, extracurricular activities and even preparing his own meals. When his brother was in the hospital, he helped take care of himself and his younger cousin.

Back at home, Desmond always makes sure Dakota is comfortable and cared for. He is incredibly considerate and flexible, understanding that his own plans might need to be changed or canceled because of doctor visits. He goes above and beyond as a big brother and Icing Smiles is proud to celebrate great kids like him.

Sugar Angel Rachel Day baked an incredible Harry Potter themed cake for Desmond’s 16th birthday. It was decorated with incredible detail, including a sorting hat, golden snitch, wand, and Ravenclaw emblem.

A cake may not seem like much when compared with everything these brothers have gone through, but the joy in Desmond and Dakota’s faces after receiving the cake meant everything.

Their family will look back fondly at the pictures as a gift that keeps on giving. Desmond’s birthday party was a true celebration of giving, gratitude, and brotherhood!

Dakota’s Magical Book Of Perseverance Spells

For Dakota Butteris and his family, the whole world paused on November 16, 2017, only 3 days after his 9th birthday. After a doctor’s visit Dakota and his family was told the unthinkable. He had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. This is a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow that affects the white blood cells. Dakota’s family was devastated and shocked. Their whole world was at a standstill. Never did they imagine that they would leave the doctor with a cancer diagnosis.

After the shock of the news, Dakota spent 22 days in the Seattle Children’s Hospital. During his stay he received multiple blood transfusions and procedures. Throughout all of these procedures, Dakota has had some rough days but he continues to persevere and pick himself up over and over again. He remains courageous through each treatment and optimistic that the future will be better and cancer free. He is looking forward to his last day of chemo treatments soon.

With such a trying year for Dakota, his mom Dorris contacted Icing Smiles to have a cake created to celebrate his 11th Birthday on November 16, 2019. This is also his 2nd year Cancerversary. Sugar Angel Brenda Nelson exceeded expectations for a second time with an incredible Harry Potter cake. With Brenda and her family’s shared love for Harry Potter they each contributed to the cake making it even more special. This cake truly made Dakota’s day! Facing financial hardships, Dakota’s family would not have been able to afford such an outstanding cake. For this, they are so grateful for this blessing.
