Unfortunately, endocrine disorders cause a wide variety of symptoms, making them challenging to diagnose. In Ethan’s case, various health problems were misunderstood for years until a genetic test.

The genetic test revealed a mutation responsible for causing MEN2B. The specific mutation Ethan has also confers high risk for medullary thyroid cancer in early infancy. After twelve years without detection, cancer had spread extensively to his neck, lungs, and many lymph nodes. Due to its late detection, there is no cure, so his family is hoping for a trial drug that will slow the progression of cancer. 

A year after his diagnosis, Ethan is doing well and making the most of every day. For his Make a Wish Trip, he traveled from his home in the UK to the US to visit the Give Kids the World Village and other Orlando theme parks! During his trip, he celebrated his birthday with a gluten-free and soy-free Captain America cake made by Megan Baumann of Bake it up.
