Super Cody, Super Mario, and Super Mike

Super Cody, Super Mario, and Super Mike

Stacie already knew what the diagnosis entailed when the testing on her son, Cody, at birth was positive for Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Her older son Hunter had previously been diagnosed with it and she already knew the drill. SMA affects all of Cody and Hunter’s voluntary muscles. As a result, Cody has never been able to roll over, crawl, stand or walk unassisted. SMA also affects their ability to swallow and breath.

Despite the challenges SMA presents, Cody is very energetic, lovable and funny. He loves playing on his Ipad and Wii and Mario Kart is one of his favorite games right now. He and his brother share in their love of the limitless world of video games. The brothers even dressed up for Halloween in their costumes as Mario and Yoshi, with their power chairs decorated to look like their karts in the game!

When Cody and his family found out that they were getting Mike Elder of Black Sheep Custom Cakes in Olathe, KS to do his 9th birthday cake, they were so excited to show it off! Mike made Cody’s brother, Hunter’s dream cake too. He wanted a Skylanders cake, and ended up getting a supersized fully 3D Skylander character on a power base. To get such an amazing cake artist again for Cody, they were confident that his Mario cake would be just as perfect.

In addition to being a skilled Cake Artist and running his shop in KS, Sugar Angel Mike Elder has been a contestant on several cake competitions on TV. His most recent appearance on Food Network’s Cake Wars, Sound of Music episode, saw him win the whole episode with an amazing cake depicting the Sound of Music. Icing Smiles is so lucky to have such a talented artist with such a big heart to call on when we are in need of an extremely special cake for an extremely special kid. Mike went all out on this cake, like he has every time he’s been called to action as one of our Sugar Angels.

Both cakes, for Hunter and for Cody were beyond anything the family had expected. The boys were so proud of their amazing works of edible art and the smile in the picture of Cody with his cake is proof of the impact it had on his special day. Cody’s 9th birthday was made extra SWEET by Mike’s incredible, 3D Mario Kart cake. The family is so appreciative to Icing Smiles and our Sugar Angels, like Mike Elder, who go above and beyond their call to action to create lasting memories that otherwise the family may not be able to provide.
