A Cake that is out of this World!
When Kaylen was turning 6, she knew exactly what kind of party she wanted. Her party had to be solar system themed. After all Kaylen has been through, there’s no better way to celebrate a girl who deserves the moon and stars!
Shortly after she was born, Kaylen was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot with pulmonary atresia. Tetralogy of Fallot, or TOF, is a condition comprised of four defects in the heart that make it hard to get oxygen to the blood. Because of this, the pulmonary arteries may develop abnormally to help get the blood to the lungs for oxygen. This abnormal development, called pulmonary atresia, adds another layer of complexity to an already complicated condition.
Due to the nature of the condition, the only treatment is surgery–a fact Kaylen and her family know all too well. Kaylen had her first open heart surgery at 4 days old and her next at 16 months. At 3, she has more surgery on the horizon, including two stents and ballooning to make sure her arteries were working as they should. These were only the first of many surgeries that Kaylen will have to undergo to manage the condition for life.
Icing Smiles was happy to match Kaylen and her family with Lacy Wittenburg, the star baker that was tasked with creating a cake to fit right in with the solar system theme. The result was truly out of this world!
