Getting My Mondays Back
Sigh… Mondays… As many of us are working adults, parents, and/or students, every Sunday a small part of us may experience the Sunday night blues dreading another Monday. Well today we welcome Christian’s mom as a guest blogger to share how her son is ecstatically “Getting His Mondays Back”!
At age 5, Christian turned bright yellow while at Pre-K on May 7, 2015. His pediatrician immediately sent us to OU Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma as he knew something serious was going on. However, nothing could have prepared us for what came.
After extensive testing, Christian was diagnosed with Stage 1 Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma, a very rare childhood cancer. The tumor was the size of a tennis ball and located on his pancreas which is a very unusual place for this type of cancer. The tumor had crushed his bile duct causing him to become extremely jaundiced very quickly. Otherwise, Christian was completely free from any pain or symptom that could have indicated anything was going on inside his body. He was a perfectly healthy little boy with all the energy in the world.
Due to the very aggressive nature of this cancer, Christian immediately began a very aggressive cancer treatment plan that included 43 weeks of chemotherapy and 28 sessions of radiation. He suffered with some neuropathy, weight loss, and fatigue, but he never lost his fighting spirit. He fought with the bravest smile this world has ever seen.
On February 19, 2016, a PET scan found Christian to be cancer-free also referred to as No Evidence of Disease. He finished his cancer treatment on April 5, 2016! Christian is happy to spend less time at the hospital and is working very hard to catch up on all the schoolwork he missed by not being able to attend Kindergarten. He says he is “getting his Mondays back” as he has spent every single Monday for nearly a year with his oncologist and chemo nurses. He is happy to sleep in and have more time for basketball and video games as well as to spend with his older brother and little sister. He is a true hero and a SURVIVOR.
The cake was beyond amazing! It was just as delicious as it was beautiful. Christian smiled from ear to ear when he saw Scooby and Shaggy.
Christian’s cake was graciously made by Mikel Parkes with Sweet Sensations in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Thank you Mikel for bringing a BIG smile to Christian’s face! We are so excited to have you as a Sugar Angel and look forward to seeing more “smiles” in the future.
