A Year to Celebrate Ava

A Year to Celebrate Ava

The beginning
of a new year marks a fresh start and a chance to look back on the previous year. For Ava, this past year was extra special – it was one her doctors said she may not see.

When Ava was 10 months old, she began tilting her head to the side. Her parents brought her to the pediatrician, thinking she had a stiff neck. After some tests, the doctors determined that the cause of the behavior was something much more serious. The doctors found a mass in her brain and diagnosed her with stage 3 anaplastic ependymoma.

Anaplastic ependymoma is a rare brain cancer in which brain cells grow very rapidly and in irregular shapes. This leads to tumors which can cause mood changes and nausea, among other symptoms. Ava’s family immediately sought expert help. Doctors worked diligently to remove the tumor, but there was a small amount left that wasn’t accessible. The remaining tissue unfortunately spread, and Ava needed further treatment.

That setback wasn’t enough to stop Ava and her family’s fighting spirit. Four surgeries and countless rounds of radiation and chemotherapy later, Ava is still fighting like the champion she is! She has not let any of her doctor visits get her down; she keeps up her winning attitude and a smile never leaves her face. Her cake from Icing Smiles was the perfect way to celebrate such an important birthday. Visit the family’s Facebook page to keep up with Ava and her journey.
