Caution: Memories under Construction! Henry’s Hitting a Milestone!
Three-year-old Henry sounds a lot like my brother. He loves trucks of all kinds. Like my brother, garbage trucks and construction equipment are his favorite kinds of trucks. A birthday cake covered in trucks would be a dream come true.
Luckily for Henry, Sugar Angels like Samantha Corder make cake dreams come true. Our dream cakes are cakes with tiered, three-dimensional or carved features. These extra special cakes help families celebrate extra special occasions and make happy memories during medical challenges.
In Henry’s case, his third birthday became a bright moment during his fight with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Henry was diagnosed with AML in 2017. Since the cancer was aggressive and returned twice during treatment, his doctors performed a bone marrow transplant to attempt to put the cancer into remission.
Shortly afterwards, the cancer returned again. At this point, his parents had to make a difficult choice between aggressive treatments that he may not survive or mild treatment that would keep the cancer in remission without a cure. Agonizingly, they decided to proceed with the milder treatments and moved to be near childhood AML experts. The milder treatments kept the cancer in remission for a short time, but a few days after his third birthday he relapsed.
Currently, Henry is undergoing intensive treatment. Facing the fear that this could be his last chance for a cure, his family holds tight to happy memories. Henry’s mother Robin said the cake “brought him a lot of joy.” He loves telling everyone at the hospital, “It had garbage trucks! And traffic cones for eating!” A little piece of imagination made into reality truly made special memories to last a lifetime for this family.
