Captain Graylon’s Fifth birthday!

Graylon celebrated his fifth birthday with an awesome Captain America cake! Due to COVID-19, Graylon’s family was not able to have as big of a celebration as they originally planned, but Icing Smiles had the privilege to completely make his day with a fun and delicious cake from Hey Honey! Cakery.

Graylon was born with PPHN (Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn) at birth. At two days old doctors placed him on ECMO (heart and lung mechanical bypass) to try to keep his oxygen levels high enough. He went on to spend two months in level 4 Neonatal ICU care. After leaving the hospital, he continued to progress but was frequently getting sick and struggling with breathing issues.

It wasn’t until this past spring (at 4 years old) that his family received his diagnosis of MPS type 2 (Mucopolysaccharidosis type 2, also known as Hunters Syndrome). MPS type 2 is an extremely rare progressive genetic disease that affects every organ of the body. It is compared to a childhood version of Alzheimer’s disease.

However, Graylon does not let his disease hold him down. He is a very happy, energetic little boy and a true miracle! We at Icing Smiles are so happy to have helped make his day brighter (and yummier!) with a dream cake to celebrate.
