Baker Spotlight: Meet Janet Brown

Baker Spotlight: Meet Janet Brown

Behind the Sugar: Blog Edition

Today we are excited to share our interview with the talented Janet Brown with The Cake Studio in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania who donated a cake for 7 year old Bentley.

Wikipedia tells us that a Superhero is a type of heroic character that usually possesses supernatural or superhuman powers and is dedicated to fighting the evil of his/her universe, protecting the public, and battling super-villains. They can be male or female, children or adults, old or young, black or white, or even animals and mystical creatures. But, their purpose is always the same; fighting crime and a strong desire to protect the innocent.

Like most kids, 7 year old Bentley loves Superhero’s specifically Marvel and DC Comics. The idea that there are characters out there that have overcome trauma and continuously face adversity with strength, in essence, gives kids hope. Well, maybe not that one day they will be able to fly, LOL, but definitely that they too can become humanitarians and in some ways do their own part to save the world and make it a better place!

Bentley in his own way is definitely a modern day Superhero! He’s battling Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, fought cochlear implant and cataract, wrestled ASD, Austism, and ADHD, and came to blows with sensory and circulatory system issues. He’s a true WARRIOR indeed! Which is why it was only right that Icing Smiles sent one of their best Sugar Angel heroes to help him celebrate his 7th birthday!

Addams Family Cake Wars winner Janet Brown has been decorating cakes for over 18 years. She was originally a Graphic Artist. She became interested in Icing Smiles after learning more about it at a Cake Show. So with the Incredible Hulk being the center of attention and highlight of the cake, Janet set off to create her masterpiece.

To create her crime fighting creation Janet shared, “The cake is mostly stacked tiers. The hulk is green modelling chocolate that was molded onto a copper tubing base.  To support the weight, his core is a PVC pipe over a long bolt. I sunk him into the top cake and put chocolate “rocks” around to look like he had burst through the cake.” The cake flavors were chocolate and more chocolate! She elected for modeling chocolate because she wanted the cake to be completely edible without the kids peeling off fondant layers.

Janet shared the best part about volunteering with Icing Smiles is the children’s reactions. “[Bentley’s family] was wonderful and it was a pleasure to make that cake for the little superhero himself! His mom sent me a picture of him and all his superheroes lined up on the table. The cake is in the middle but you can’t tell it isn’t a toy.

Thank you Janet for bringing a BIG smile to Bentley’s face! We are truly excited to have you as a Sugar Angel and look forward to seeing more “smiles” from you in the future!
