Baker Spotlight: Meet Amy Eagan and Tavares Evans

Baker Spotlight: Meet Amy Eagan and Tavares Evans

Behind the Sugar: Blog Edition

Today we are excited to share our interview with the talented Amy Eagan and Tavares Evans of Cakes 2-A-T in Baltimore, Maryland who are our featured Sugar Artist for this years Nielsen-Massey Buttercream Ball – Baltimore.

Floyd Mayweather once said, “Everybody is blessed with a certain talent, you have to know what that talent is… you have to maximize it and push it to the limit.” So, naturally when we were seeking out Sugar Artist to highlight this year’s Nielsen-Massey Buttercream Ball – Baltimore, we wanted the best the city had to offer! Sugar Artist of the highest quality and excellence, ones who give back to their community and support our mission, passionate about their craft, and work hard to deliver continual ‘smiles’ to all their clients; that is Cakes 2-A-T.

Amy Eagan and Tavares Evans established themselves 8 years ago as a premier custom cake company specializing in personalized cakes that fit their customers (from local clients to international celebrities) 2-A-T. With the financial backing of Tavares’ grandmother who laid the foundation for their business, they have grown to an elite group of decorators with celebrity clients including the likes of Jamie Foxx, Kevin Hart, Snoop Dogg, Alicia Keys, Patti Labelle, as well as countless Baltimore Ravens football players including Joe Flacco, Terrell Suggs and Brandon Williams, Russell Simmons, and Floyd Mayweather to name a few.

Cakes 2-A-T’s recipe for success is definitely no secret… combine a dash of faith with a sprinkle of love, mix in the support of their family and a little perseverance and there you go. They credit the ‘smiles’ from the children and the relationships they’ve built with the families as their most enjoyable moments volunteering with Icing Smiles. “We love to help. Icing Smiles provides a seamless way to get involved… they contact YOU with the need and insure the process both literally and figuratively,” they said when asked what interested them in Icing Smiles.

That’s awesome they love to help, because we contacted them to design a dream cake for Xavier who was recovering from a liver transplant performed in 2014. Xavier’s mother requested a chocolate cake and stated his favorite hobby was playing the Xbox system, specifically the Halo game. Tavares created the console and Amy crafted the remote control.

Christina Blunt smiles with her son Xavier Blunt after the nonprofit Icing Smiles worked with Crofton bakers Cakes 2-A-T o deliver a lifelike Xbox cake to him the day before his 13th birthday. Xavier recently received a liver transplant.

Xavier’s mom wrote, “Through Icing Smiles, Inc., Cakes 2-A-T delivered a custom birthday cake to our son Xavier in December 2014. It was Xavier’s 14th birthday and it had been a year tough year for him. His illness, acute liver failure resulting in a liver transplant followed by a diagnosis of severe aplastic anemia, was sudden and had taken a toll on him. Cakes 2-A-T delivered an Xbox cake to Xavier and boy did it put a smile on his face, a smile that we hadn’t seen in quite some time. Xavier absolutely loved his cake! We can’t thank Tavares and Amy enough for the joy that they brought to our son and family that day. The best part about this delivery is that we have kept in touch since that day and they both have such huge hearts. They genuinely care and that’s what makes their cakes that much more special! Xavier is doing amazingly well and Tavares and Amy love to follow his recovery. He still talks about his cake to this day!” Xavier’s story was featured in the Capital Gazette newspaper and can be read here.

Amy and Tavares not only have a passion for baking and cake decorating, but a genuine love for each other, as their business grew out of a friendship that dates back to their childhood. And, if there’s anything they love more than each other it’s definitely the City of Baltimore!

In addition to being Sugar Angels for Icing Smiles, Amy and Tavares established Mark of Love, Inc., a Baltimore non-profit whose mission is to spread love and leave a mark on the city’s youth by providing essential needs, mentor role-modeling and incentive programs. The non-profit partners with the local community and some corporate sponsors to provide holiday parties, field trips, shoes and clothing, and free haircuts to children in need.

Thank you Amy and Tavares for bringing a BIG smile to our kids’ faces! We are so excited to have you as Sugar Angels and this year’s featured Sugar Artists for Nielsen-Massey’s Buttercream Ball – Baltimore! We look forward to seeing more “smiles” from you in the future.
