Juniper’s growing up! A BIG first year with a lot of heart

A first birthday is a major milestone for not only the birthday girl but also her parents. The day marks one whole year of learning, growing, and becoming a family. For Juniper’s family, her first birthday was a celebration that began long before she was even born.

Juniper’s parents were elated leaving the doctor’s appointment that revealed that they were having a baby girl. They were on cloud nine, planning and dreaming of the day they would finally meet their girl. A call from the doctor a few days later brought news that sent them crashing from their cloud: they needed to return for more tests since the images of the baby’s heart weren’t showing all of the chambers.

After more tests and a team of specialists, a diagnosis was delivered. Juniper had a congenital heart defect in which only one of her heart’s ventricles is able to pump enough blood to support the rest of her body. While this news was shocking, the medical team was able to provide a clear treatment plan that could start as soon as Juniper was born.

Before she could leave the hospital, Juniper needed three major surgeries. The family spent the next few months in and out of the hospital for additional surgeries and procedures. Thanks to the strong support of all of those around her, Juniper is doing wonderfully!
