A Supergirl Gift for Superhero Sloan!

Gifts are a major theme of the holiday season. Finding the perfect present can show someone just how much you care. For Sloan, however, the best gift she ever received came back in September of 2017 when a living donor gave her the gift of life. Sloan was born a normal, happy, healthy baby. When her jaundice, a liver condition common in some newborns, wasn’t going away on its own, her parents sought a medical opinion. At just 3 months old, she was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia.

Biliary Atresia is a rare condition in which the bile produced from the liver cells cannot be drained into the intestines as it normally would. When bile is trapped inside the liver, it can cause damage and, eventually, liver failure. Just one month after her diagnosis, Sloan was fortunate enough to receive a transplant with a functioning liver.

The year that followed proved tough, but Sloan is tougher. Transplants are followed by routine blood monitoring to ensure that the body is accepting the new organ. Sloan powered through constant poking and prodding like the warrior girl she is! Her supergirl cake is the perfect symbol for the year Sloan has had post-transplant.
